Exciting challenges ahead as China expansion continues building

July 15, 2014

Web Structures’ portfolio of work in China continues to grow with the team involved in the preliminary design stage of a number of new challenging projects in the economic powerhouse of Asia.

They include plans to create a new spa resort in Yangzhou city. Web Structures is working with acclaimed London-based architecture practice Heah & Co on the ambitious development.

The building will be completed with traditional Chinese architectural finishes to reproduce the look of the iconic, world-famous JiangNan gardens.

Web Structures is bringing its expertise and knowledge to the engineering challenges of the project, which includes a three-story spa building, a basement swimming pool and garden and a number of villas.

The spa is being created by the Brilliant Hotel Management Group and is the latest in a series of resort projects for the company that Web Structures has been involved in.

The Web Structures team is giving special consideration to the structural work for the basement – adopting systems to keep the structure flexible and lightweight.

It is already working on Brilliant resort projects in Chongqing and Kunming with Heah and Co, a practice that offers holistic architectural, interior and furniture design services predominantly in the international luxury resort hotel market.

The Chongqing project has seen Web Structures utilise its experience in environmentally sensitive regions to help create a cliff top resort with a main 1,720 sq metre building and 32 spa villas.

In Kunming, the practice’s expertise in working in areas of high seismicity is playing an important role in delivery.

Web Structures has also been appointed to advise on the development of ambitious plans to refurbish a well-established hotel in Shanghai.

The designs for this project are being created by the Hong Kong office of Bilkey Llinas Design – an architecture practice that has delivered iconic hotel developments across the globe.

Its vision for the building involves the alteration to the hotel’s existing hotel lobby and the creation of a stunning grand staircase as a centrepiece.

In both projects a professional working relationship has been established between Web Structures and the Local Design Institute (LDI) namely Nanjing University of Technology’s architectural design department.

Dr Hossein Rezai, group director of Web Structures, says: “This collaboration with the LDI at the university means that our services will be offered in a holistic manner, from conceptual design stage until the final completion of the projects.”

He added: “These latest projects in China underline our continuing growth and demand for our services in the country, with architects and developers keen to utilise our experience and approach to engineering and structural challenges.”

Web Structures is now providing its engineering expertise to a host of development projects in China.

It has a strong track record of delivery in the country that stretches back more than a decade. During that time it has been involved in a number of mixed-use and hotel developments, as well as masterplanning.

Successfully-delivered developments include the striking US$320million Cambridge Forest hotel and shopping mall in Shanghai, designed by architects CSYA.
